I used to think humility was a form of thinking others better than yourself. I am changing my opinion as I work on cleaner living.
Thinking of oneself as equal to others seems like a much more practical form of humility. It is more egalitarian and fair. And it is hard to do. But it lacks the up-down-ness of thinking others are above you, which only implies a hierarchy and puts you above others somewhere along the line: not very humble.
It seems to hold water in view of our death which holds us all equal.
